Tournament Report

Lorri Broda Takes Down the 2009 Legends of Poker Event #4 – the LIPS Tour

The 2009 Legends of Poker had its fourth overall event and the first LIPS Tour event at their newly remodeled Events Center with a $340 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament. The 1-day event began with a total of 75 players and a prize pool of $21,495. In addition to first prize of $8,600 the winner also received a championship ring and an automatic bid to the LIPS Tour event at Las Vegas. Final table play began at level 14 with blinds at 3k-6k with a $1500 ante. Rayna Davis entered the final table as the chip leader holding $134,500 of the $830,500 chips in play.

Not long into the beginning of final table play did we see our first elimination. On the third hand Rayna Davis raised 18K with 7-8 suited in late position, forcing the short stack Mychele Medina into calling all-in with pocket 6’s. The board came 5-J-2-8-3 as Mychele’s pocket sixes were beaten by Rayna’s pair of eights sending the short stack out in 9th place for $450.

Three hands later, Yvonne Thompson raised all-in pre-flop with A-6 and was called by Rita Baumer with pocket 8’s. The flop of 3-2-J gave no help to Yvonne and it was not until the river Ace came that Yvonne was able to eliminate Rita from the tournament in 8th place earning Rita $540.

Hand #23 saw the most fireworks at the final table with the two big stacks battling it out. Rayna started the action by raising to $18K with A-K which Lorri called with Q-10. The flop came K-J-9 a dream flop for Lorri and a nightmare for Rayna. Lorri led out with a bet of $15K and Rayna Davis re-raised to $35K. Lorri Broda pushed all-in and was quickly called by Rayna. With the turn a 7 and the river a 6, Lorri’s King high straight was enough to eliminate Rayna Davis in 7th place netting Rayna $730. This hand gave Lorri a dominate chip lead and when interviewed later she said this was the key hand for her at the final table.

On the 36th hand the Hall of Fame player Barbara Enright pushed all in from late position with A-K suited. Yvonne re-raised the all in by $30K with A-J and then Julie Dang pushed all-in with pocket 6’s. The board stayed low with 3-7-2 on the flop and 5-8 on the turn and river. The result was the elimination of Barbara Enright and a severe crippling of Yvonne’s chip stack. Barbara Enright left the tournament in 6th place earning her $975.

Almost four full rounds passed before our next elimination hand. On the 53rd hand Carmen Wick raised all-in and was called by Lorri Broda. The cards were turned over showing Carmen with a Q-2 and Lorri with A-3 suited. The flop came 6-5-K helping neither player the turn was a 10 and the river a 7, allowing Lorri to take down the pot with Ace high and also eliminating Carmen Wick in the process. With Carmen’s 5th place finish in the tournament she earned $1,180.

We only had to wait two hands for our next elimination. Lorri raised all-in on the button with pocket J’s and she was called by Tamara Harrison in the big blind with pocket 7’s. The flop was 9-10-8 giving both players open ended straight draws, however neither draw manifested with a 2 on the turn and a 9 on the river. Lorri’s pocket J’s were good enough to beat Tamara sending her out of the tournament in 4th place earning $1,500.

Five hands later on the 60th hand Yvonne pushed all-in with A-K suited on the button, and Julie Dang called her with pocket 9’s. Julie’s pocket 9’s were able to hold up against the A-K as the board came J-2-5-4-5 ending the tournament for Yvonne Thomson who left in third place, earning $2,580.

There were 27 hands played heads-up between Lorri Broda and Julie Dang before the final hand of the tournament. There were some large pots won during this time but in the end Lorri still had a significant chip lead on Julie, and on the 88th hand Lorri raised from $50K from the button and Julie re-raised $150K, this caused Lorri to re-raise all-in with K-10 Suited and Julie immediately called with A-7. The flop came 9-10-2 giving Lorri a lead she would not relinquish. The turn was a 6 and again the river was a 6 earning Lorri the championship win, the championship ring, a LIPS necklace, and a seat in the upcoming LIPS tournament in Las Vegas later this year. Julie Dang went out in 2nd place earning her $4,940.

BIOGRAPHY

Lorri Broda is an Associate Producer who has been playing poker for 5 years now. She absolutely prefers tournament play over cash games, and while she feels that Texas Hold’em is her best game, her favorite game is Limit Omaha Hi/Lo. Her strategy early was to play “super tight” but that idea was abandoned after she suffered two bad beats, instead she became aggressive using her chips to her advantage quite well. Lorri also believes that women can read other women well and that contributed to her making some tough decisions throughout the tournament. While this is her first tournament win she has had success finishing 68th in the World Series Ladies Event in a field of 1060, and a strong 3rd place finish in the California State Championship Event with a field of 1898 this past May.
