Tournament Report
James Berry Wins the 2009 Legends of Poker Event #16 – the $545 No Limit Hold’em Tournament
The 2009 Legends of Poker had its sixteenth overall event at the Bicycle Casino’s newly remodeled Events Center. The $545 buy-in No Limit Texas Hold’em Deepstack tournament was a 2-day event which began with a total of 181 players and a prize pool of $87,785. In addition to a first prize of $33,125 the winner also received a championship ring. Final table play began at level 17 with antes at $3K and blinds at $8K/$16K. Kwinsee Khoa Tran entered the final table as the chip leader holding $557,000 of the $2,989,000 chips in play.
On the 10th hand we actually had two all-ins. Kataneh Hamidi started the action by raising one off from the button to a total of $40K with A-8, Kwinsee Khoa Tran re-raised all-in with K-Q, Joshua Kaner then called all-in with 7-6 suited, Kataneh called both all-ins covering both player. The flop came 3-K-7 giving the lead to Kwinsee and that lead increased with a Q on the turn eliminating any hope for Joshua to double-up. The river 4 finished the hand almost tripling Kwinsee up and ending the day for Joshua in 10th place worth $1,540.
On the 15th hand Phuong Nguyen pushed all-in for $137K total pre-flop with Q-9 one off from the button, and with Phuong slowly cascading his chips into the pot he was called by Alvin Zeidenfield in the big blind with pocket 4’s. The board came 10-3-8-8-6 sending the chips to Alvin and eliminating Phuong in 9th place earning him $1,760.
We would have to wait twenty hands and two level increases before we had our next elimination. On the 35th hand with antes at $5K and blinds at $15K/$30K we again had two players all-in before the flop with a third caller. The action began with Jeffrey Finlayson shoving all-in with K-4 suited spades under the gun, James Berry re-raised all-in with pocket Q’s, and Aaron Dolgin called all-in with K-10, James covering both of the other players. The tension increased with a K in the window and two spades on the flop of K-5-9 Aaron and Jeffrey had both cracked James’ Q’s with Aaron getting the best of it while Jeffery picked up a flush draw. The flush draw would not come with the 6 of clubs on the turn and the 6 of diamonds on the river and Jeffrey was knocked out in 8th place taking home $1,975 while Aaron almost tripled up.
The action and pace increased on the very next hand when Alvin Zeidenfield raised to a total of $70K under the gun, Kataneh Hamidi then re-raised all-in, James Berry called the all-in of Kataneh, and Alvin Zeidenfield folded. The cards were turned up revealing James’ pocket J’s while Kataneh held A-K suited spades. The flop was not helpful to Kataneh when it came 5-7-4 all diamonds and with the 7 on the turn and the 9 on the river James was able to win the hand and eliminate Kataneh in 7th place earning her $2,215.
On the 38th hand Kwinsee Khoa Tran raised to $80K total with A-5 from under the gun, Hamlet Davari re-raised Kwinsee, pushing all-in from the big blind with 6-4 suited, Kwinsee thought for several moments than decided to call the all-in. The choice by Kwinsee turned out to be the right one as the flop came 10-5-5 giving Kwinsee an almost unbeatable set of 5’s. The K on the turn ended the hand early leaving Hamlet with no outs, and as the Q hit the river Hamlet was knocked out in 6th place taking home $3,075.
The remaining 5 players discussed a chip count and after the staff ran the numbers the players were in agreement to a deal. James Berry was declared the winner of the Legends of Poker sixteenth event earning him the championship ring and the first place prize of $33,150.

BIOGRAPHY
James Berry hails from Portland, Oregon where he has been playing competitive poker for the past three years. His favorite game is by far No Limit Texas Hold’em and he actually prefers the cash games to tournament play. He said that there was actually a moment where he asked himself why he had signed up for this tournament when he could be out playing live cash games, but it turns out that hid decision to play was a profitable one earning him his biggest cash to date. He noticed that the table was extremely aggressive and decided to counter that pace with tight play. The key moments for him were two separate hands that he was able to double up both times first with and A-4 that made a wheel on the river and a pocket 2’s that held up against A-Q.
